I've been reading Joseph Smith's journal lately, and in church Sunday Casey Fish gave a talk on sacrifice. He spoke specifically about the sacrifices that were made by Joseph Smith and the members of the church involved in building the Salt Lake Temple. He mentioned D&C 121, and so I read through it Sunday night. Section 121 has always been amazing, but after spending time reading Joseph Smith's journal, it had added meaning.
The Lord tells Joseph, who has been imprisoned at Liberty Jail that his afflictions shall be for a small moment. He goes on to tell him that he is not yet as Job.
This started me thinking about Christ's Atonement. It's easy to say that the Lord suffered for all of our sins, trials, pains, etc... But it is humanly impossible to comprehend. By studying the Atonement, we come to more fully understand it, but as a mortal, it is impossible really comprehend exactly what Christ went through.
But Job's situation is different. He suffered a great deal, and his suffering is something that we can wrap our minds around.
Christ could have used His Atonement as an example for Joseph. Instead, he used Job.
It was something that I had never thought of before.
